Sunday's Radio Report-Broadcast on KSLO

Good Morning (pause)

My name is Bernadette Chambers, and I am a junior at North Central High School.

First of all, on behalf of our principal, Mr. Milton Ambres, the faculty, staff, and students at at North Central High School, I would like to thank you all for making it possible for me to be here on today.

North Central High School, which was the first high school to be consolidated in St. Landry Parish, currently has an enrollment of 480 students in grades eight through twelve.

Our school has come a long way since we first opened our doors to students from Melville High School, Morrow High, Palmetto High, and Washington High in the fall of 1990.

This year we were at the top of the parish in LEAP scores and CAT results. Also

there are various clubs and organizations that have enabled many students to compete among different schools in which they received many awards and honors.

Among the various organizations the Beta Club which is sponsored by Mrs. Velma Hendrix has contributed to many charities and annual scholarships.

Ten students from North Central competed in the District V FBLA Leadership Conference at Opelousas Senior High School on February 9, 1995. Of those ten students who competed in various events, three students placed Superior and were eligible to take part in the State FBLA Leadership Conference in Alexandria. Also at the LSU-E Literary Rally, Dana Drawsand placed fourth in Accounting I.

The math club which is sponsored by Mrs.Woods has many advantages. It highers the level of low math skilled students, it allows the student to experience problems with more than one technique, and higher their esteem of learning math.

In 4-H this year, we had one member Chad Baham show livestock. He showed two polled heifers and won Grand and Reserve Champion at Parish. He won a first and third at District and also participated in the state competition.

In November, seven students in Mrs. Mamalakis 8th grade English class submitted poems to the anthology of poetry by young Americans. This company receives poems from students nationwide, then selects poems for publication. Of the 12 entries sent to the company, 7 will be published in the 1995 edition of the anthology of poetry by Young Americans.

We also have organizations which promote self esteem and encourage a drug free lifestyle such as Sape, which is sponsored by our assistant principal and Mrs. Linda Haynes. This club has been very active this 1994-95 school year. We have four leaders that has carried us throughout each group mentioned in this section. Kosha Edwards, Rheadacia Thomas, Daphne Duplechain, and Stacy Nevills are these leaders. They attended the Team Spirit Leadership Training in Richard, LA, Fashions Against Drugs at Opelousas General, Youth Leadership Conference at St. Thomas Moore, Locker to Locker which occurred this year in Lafayette, and will be attending Taking a Stand in Baton Rouge on April 21-23, 1995 and also Teen Institute at Lousiana Tech in Ruston, LA.

The SAPE Club consists of 40 students 8-12 grade. The annual SAPE Field trip will be on May 12, 1995 to Hunts Correctional Institute. The Peer leaders and SAPE members will be in charge of Teacher Appreciation Week Activities in May.

North Central has always excelled in sports, and this year was no exception. Coach Butch Fontenot who is the coach of the year really did well this season with his team. The most valuable player in the district was Anthony Compton, and the most valuable point guard was Clarence Chambers. These two students are seniors and really led their team to victory.

Here at North Central we have students who have excelled in the area of music and the arts. Reginald Jackson, Wilson Doomes, Shawna Offord, and Joseph Doucet represented North Central High's marching band at the annual solo festival at USL. The purpose of this festival is for each contestant to be judged on a basis of how well his or her performance is on a prepared sheet of music. All four received "superior"honors. These were the highest honors that could be obtained.

Joshua Guillory, who is a student in Ted Bertrand's Art II class was the winner of the High School Division School Board Contest in St. Landry Parish. His drawing went on to be displayed at the Louisiana School board Convention in February. Josh is currently painting a school shield at the front entrance of our school which he designed himself. He is hoping to have the project completed sometime next month.

Page Shaw, another student in Mr. Ted Bertand's Art II class has designed a mural which will be on the hall near our lunch room. Page has sketched the mural in pencil and will complete this project next month also. He will be helped by some students in Mr. Bertand's 1st period Art Class.

Nathan Hickman has painted one more Hurricane logo on the gym wall this year. Others were done by Mr. Bertrand's students in the past years.

These three individuals were invited to a computer graphics workshop at Northwestern University in Nachitoches. Out of 60 students in the state, 3 were chosen from North Central High School. At this workshop, they learned about a program called Adobe Photoshop.

In the 1995 St. Landry Parish Social Studies Fair, North Central High had more first place winners in Division III Group Projects than any other school in the parish. Five students placed 1st with the project entitled the Ankh and African Unity. Two placed second with the project entitled Abortion.

In the area of Ag we have had winners also, for example; Jamie Ardoin, who is in Mr. Hal Beard's Ag II Class, has placed second in the State Electrification Contest. Jamie also placed second in the Area III Electrification Contest and won first place in the parish contest. Garrett Schexnayder placed fourth.

On May 12-13 1995 the second annual District Five Halleluja Festival will be held at North Central High School. Many exciting events have been planned for these three days.

A field day is scheduled for Friday, May 12, at each school within District 5. A coronation kick-off is scheduled for Friday evening. On Saturday, May 13, a student talent competition willl be held in the North Central High auditorium, and a cook-off will also be held at 11-12:00 noon. The festival will close with a Gospel Extravaganza on Saturday evening at 6:30 p.m.

We would like to invite all our listeners and friends to come out and support us in this event which is a fundraiser for the schools in our district to buy needed supplies for our students.

Until next time!
